The liver is the only organ capable of regenerating: after surgery it recovers much of its size and function within a few weeks. You will be operated on by a specialised team, with a plan designed for your case.
Before surgery
PrehabilitationWalk 30–60 min a day and stop alcohol and tobacco completely from diagnosis.
NutritionA protein-rich diet. If you have lost weight, supplements will be considered.
FastingNo solids for 6 hours before; clear fluids up to 2 hours before.
MedicationTell us about all your medication, especially blood thinners and herbal products, which must be stopped.
TestsAdditional tests may be needed. Attend all scheduled appointments.
The day of surgery
AnaesthesiaGeneral, with advanced monitoring and specific fluid management during the resection.
TechniqueDepending on the case: laparoscopic, robotic or open. Your surgeon will explain the planned approach.
DurationHighly variable: usually between 2 and 5 hours.
On waking upFirst hours in a monitoring unit. You may have an abdominal drain and urinary catheter.
After surgery
MonitoringLiver function tests are checked. Some temporary alteration is normal and resolves on its own.
Getting movingSitting up and first steps within 24 h. Breathing physiotherapy with an incentive spirometer several times a day.
TirednessFatigue is the most common symptom and may last 4–8 weeks while the liver regenerates. It is to be expected.
ActivityWalk daily, increasing distance. No lifting or intense exercise for 4–6 weeks.
