Bile duct stones

Surgical exploration of the bile duct

Typical stay: 2–4 days

When a gallstone passes into the bile duct, it can be resolved in a single operation: the stone is removed and the gallbladder is taken out in the same procedure, usually laparoscopically. This avoids having to undergo two separate procedures.

Before surgery

Blood tests and imagingBlood tests and imaging will be performed to locate the stone and assess the bile duct.
JaundiceIf your skin or eyes are yellow, your urine dark or your stools pale, tell us: it is important information.
FastingNo solids for 6 hours before; clear fluids up to 2 hours before.
MedicationTell us if you take blood thinners or antiplatelets. You will receive specific instructions.

The day of surgery

AnaesthesiaGeneral anaesthesia.
TechniqueLaparoscopically, the bile duct is checked with a contrast X-ray (cholangiography), the stone is removed and the gallbladder is taken out in the same procedure.
DurationBetween 1.5 and 3 hours depending on difficulty.
Drain or tubeIn some cases a drain or a tube in the bile duct (T-tube) is left for a few days. Your surgeon will tell you if this applies to you.

After surgery

MonitoringLiver blood tests are checked over the first days. Some temporary alteration is normal.
DietStart with fluids and progress as tolerated. Avoid very fatty foods for the first few weeks.
Getting movingWalk from the same day. Early movement reduces complications.
T-tubeIf you have one, you will receive clear instructions on its care and when it will be removed. Do not handle or clamp it yourself.
ActivityNo lifting over 5 kg for 2–3 weeks.
