Umbilical or epigastric hernia

Midline hernia repair

Typical stay: Day surgery

This is one of the most common and straightforward procedures in abdominal wall surgery. It is performed as day surgery: you will go home the same day and can walk right away.

Before surgery

FastingNo solids for 6 hours before; clear fluids up to 2 hours before.
Your usual medicationConfirm what to take on the day of surgery. Tell us if you take blood thinners or antiplatelets.
Smoking and weightStopping smoking and, where relevant, losing some weight reduce the risk of the hernia coming back.
HygieneShower with soap and water the night before and that morning, paying attention to the navel.
CompanionYou will need someone to take you home and cannot drive that day.

The day of surgery

AnaesthesiaMay be done with local anaesthesia and sedation, spinal or general, depending on size and your case.
TechniqueThe defect is closed and, in most cases, reinforced with a mesh to prevent recurrence.
DurationUsually between 30 and 45 minutes.

After surgery

DiscomfortModerate pain, swelling and bruising for a few days is normal. Take your painkillers regularly.
Getting movingWalk from day one. Bed rest is not needed.
ExertionNo lifting over 5 kg or abdominal exercise for 3–4 weeks.
Constipation and coughingAvoid straining, and support the area with your hand when coughing: it protects the repair.
Wound careShower after 24–48 h. Watch for redness or discharge.
