Typical stay: Day surgery

This is a very common, safe procedure with excellent results. In most cases you will go home the same day and can walk right away.

Before surgery

FastingNo solids for 6 hours before; clear fluids up to 2 hours before.
Your usual medicationConfirm what to take on the day of surgery. Tell us if you take blood thinners or antiplatelets.
SmokingStopping smoking improves healing and reduces coughing, which increases pain.
HygieneShower with soap and water. Do not shave the area yourself: it will be done at the hospital if needed.
CompanionYou will need someone to take you home. You cannot drive that day.

The day of surgery

AnaesthesiaGeneral or spinal, depending on your case; the anaesthetist will decide with you.
TechniqueA mesh is placed to reinforce the abdominal wall, either through an open groin incision or laparoscopically (3 small incisions).
DurationUsually between 30 and 60 minutes.

After surgery

DiscomfortBruising and swelling in the area (including the genitals) is normal for a few days. Take your painkillers as prescribed.
Getting movingWalk from day one. Avoid sitting still for many hours.
ExertionDo not lift more than 5 kg or do intense exercise for 2–4 weeks. Walking is encouraged from the start.
ConstipationDrink plenty of fluids and eat fibre. Avoid straining; ask us if you need a laxative.
